Amber

Title: Amber
Author Name: T. Strange
Publication Date & Length: January 15, 2014 – 52pgs

Synopsis

Anthony was a painter until he lost the ability to see color. Worse than color blindness, the edges of objects and people blur together, making it almost impossible for Anthony to interact with anyone or anything. After retreating from the world for decades, he sees a glimpse of yellow that leads him to a musician, Teague. At first Anthony is frightened and overwhelmed by the color, but he can’t stay away from Teague for long. He finds the courage to confront Teague and explain his unusual problem and Teague’s role in helping him. To Anthony’s relief, Teague believes him. Very quickly, they both suspect that getting the colors back is more important to Anthony than his relationship with Teague. If Anthony pushes too hard, he’ll lose Teague, and possibly the colors, forever.

I admit that when I began reading this, I didn’t have high hopes. It began a little oddly, and it was hard to tell where it was going at first. The author’s style is very poetic with a lot of metaphors, and I was concerned that it would become hard to read. Instead, it was exactly the opposite. Once I was a few pages in, I couldn’t put it down.

This is one of the most wonderful short stories I’ve read in a long time. It’s sensual, beautiful, and emotional without being overdone. By the end, and despite–or perhaps because of–the happy-for-now ending, I was in tears.

The tension between what the main character thinks he wants (to regain his ability to see color) and what he discovers he actually wants (love) is beautifully woven into all Anthony and Teague’s interactions, from the mundane to the erotic. They are an exceptional pair, their own people yet highly relatable.

It will take me some time to process the layers and subtleties of the story. Far from being a bad thing, that makes this work masterful. It’s a must-read for anyone who enjoys taking a deeper look at the complexities of life and relationships. However, for some people, that may be a turn-off, particularly those who simply want to read a good story with a happy ending.

Because of the short length, I was able to sit down and read the whole thing at once. Rather than leaving me wanting more, I finished the story fully satisfied. It is an excellent stand-alone piece. I hope to read more from this author.

I give it 5 stars.

4-5 Stars for The Consumed Series by Felicia Fox – #F/F #F/F/M #Paranormal

When passion and obsession collide, someone has to fall.

Consumed –
Book 1

Felicity has never met someone like Alex before. Alex literally glows from their lovemaking. For the first time, Felicity is in love, but the woman she’s spent the last two months with may not actually be a woman at all. Felicity knows that Alex is something more, but she doesn’t know exactly what. Allowing Alex into her life might be the worst mistake she’s ever made…

FourStars

Felicity is falling in love with the other worldly being named Alex. Alex is attempting to say goodbye. Neither really wants to end what they have, but there is something behind Alex needing to leave.

I rather enjoyed this short story. It was sexy and interesting and made me want more. I want to know how Felicity and Alex came to meet for the first time, where they are going and more about the story in general.

The end leaves us in quite an open spot, cliff hanger of sorts. Although there is a few times where the wording threw me off like ‘This blazing energy that I keep locked inside of me, that I have fought so hard to not expose just surged through me.’ I don’t think that’s really how someone would explain powers that they have.

However, I can’t wait to jump into the next part of the series and see where it goes

Captive – Book 2

As Felicity falls deeper in love with Alex, she finds herself immersed in Alex’s dark, erotic, succubus world. She and Alex are both in danger as a killer trails their every move. Not even the threat of torture and death can stop their passion when Alex reveals her motives for finding Felicity. Will their love conquer all or will they meet their end at the hands of a madman?

As I had hoped for, we get to know how Felicity and Alex came to meet and what their first time together was like. We also get to meet Gideon, Alex’s best friend, who ends up being a third with the two women.

There is a much bigger back story here that I hadn’t expected from the first installment and it rolled out quite nicely in this book.

There is a difference in the world Alex lives in and the one Felicity is used to, but just when Alex is starting to open up and share some secrets, we find out about the big bad monster in their path.

Very well written, fast page turning novella. I can’t wait for the third part!

Crave – Book
3

When passion sets your soul on fire.

Object of a deadly obsession, Felicity has been taken by the crazed incubus, Marius. Secrets, lies, and betrayals are mounting against Alex and Felicity. Will their passion and love be enough to keep from breaking Felicity, or will Alex’s world be the end of her?

We learn about a secret past that Felicity and Alex didn’t know about from Felicity’s Crazy Aunt. It’s interesting to learn what happens with the nightmare from book 2 and who is the insider.

There is a nice little surprise at the end (which I’d been hoping for). I’m hoping it leaves to possibility of another story to follow this one.

It was very well written and I couldn’t put down any of the three books and can’t wait to read more from this author.

Letters to a War Zone

Title: Letters to a War Zone
Author Name: Lucy Felthouse
Publication Date & Length: March 28, 2014 – 28pgs

Synopsis

When lonely insurance broker, Bailey, gets himself a new hobby, he ends up exchanging letters with a war zone. But he’s not expecting what happens next…

Bailey Hodgkiss is lonely and dissatisfied with his boring life as an insurance broker. In an attempt to shake things up a little, he signs up to a website to write to serving soldiers. He’s put in touch with Corporal Nick Rock, and over the course of a couple of letters, the two of them strike up a friendship. They begin to divulge things that they perhaps wouldn’t have said in person, including their preference for men.

Nick encourages Bailey to add more interests to his life. As a result, Bailey picks up his forgotten hobby, photography, and quickly decides to team it up with his other preferred interest, travel.

Booking a holiday to Rome is his biggest gesture towards a more exciting existence, and he eagerly looks forward to the trip. That is, until Nick says he’s coming home on leave, and it looks as though their respective trips will prevent them from meeting in person. Is there enough of a spark between them to push them to meet, or will their relationship remain on paper only?

Letters to a War Zone.
I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Lucy Felthouse did a fantastic job of creating a story line that was so heartfelt.  I loved her characters, Bailey and Nick.

I thought she did a great job of describing Bailey’s lack of interest in what his life had become. I also loved that she used the old pen pals system as a way that the characters connected. I wish she developed Nick a little more, but his character was developed enough for the story line.

Nick and Bailey bond over a terrible disease that plagued someone they love. I felt their pain when they discussed the disease – they both felt horrible about it. Felthouse was able to develop their feelings quickly.

As the reader, I felt their emotions through the writing. Despite their short correspondence, the bond that’s created between the characters is unmistakable. Felthouse did a wonderful job of allowing their feelings for life and even love, to develop quickly. Sometimes you just click with someone.

I loved this story and wish that I knew how Rome went.

She’s younger and cooler than most of the other people she sits for and Molly finds herself lingering at the end of the night, asking the older girl questions about life and love… and sex. Turns out revenge is a dish best served up blazing hot!

Stay

Dr. Mary Rennalls looks at beautiful Claire with more than pity and compassion, but will the two women find solace in each other’s arms, or will Claire’s fear of losing yet another loved one keep her from trusting again?

I’ve never read Selena Kitt before but I’ll tell you after reading this I will be looking for more of her work!!! The tens short stories are EXTREMELY sexy and naughty. Every story was very well written with believable characters that sucked you in and made you wish you were there yourself! They are all solid Woman/Woman encounters. Some are first time experiences while others are women that have been with other women before. Such a great combination all around for every story in this collection!
