Title: Dancing on the Edge (Tales from the Edge #3)
Author Name: L.M. Somerton
Publication Date & Length: September 13, 2013 – 112pgs

Synopsis

Life is a dance. Whether you lead or follow, the passion of it should sweep you away.

Carey and Alistair have the kind of relationship that is the envy of their friends. Carey is an old-fashioned Dom who appreciates quiet obedience. Alistair is a sub who is comfortable in his skin and finds peace in his submission. Needless to say, their happiness is too good to last.

When Alistair’s powerful father chooses his reputation over his son, all hell is let loose. Forcibly committed to a clinic for reversion therapy, Alistair can only hope that his lover will save him.

Carey calls on his friends from The Edge and they band together not just to rescue Alistair but also to protect his future. They’ve all flirted with danger in the past – but friendship is worth any risk. As the tension mounts and the stakes get higher, new bonds are forged but will Carey and Alistair’s love survive?

Reader Advisory: This book contains the use of restraints, the pushing of boundaries and edging, kidnap, forceful imprisonment and forms of visual torture along with scenes of prolonged physical torture. It also contains characters with extreme prejudiced views. This book is best read in sequence as part of the series

FiveStars

This book has some abusive “therapy” – if that type of thing bother’s you, do not read.
Carey and Alistair are a great pair. Despite their age difference, they are exactly what each other needs.
I love Alistair’s confidence. It makes him a very likable character. So often the subs are unsure, timid and almost whiny – Alistair is SO not like that and I loved it! Despite his background, he found a world where he was comfortable, safe and honored. When he is faced with unspeakable torment at the hands of his father, his inner confidence shows through with the power to fight back.
I love Carey’s protectiveness. Despite having some reservations about Alistair’s age, Carey realizes that love really knows no age. He accepts Alistair’s submission with such grace and love – it’s hard not to want such a happy ending for these two. When trouble brews, Carey calls in all his favors, because he knows he’s found something special in Alistair and he wasn’t willing to give it up.
The twists in this story kept me on my toes. I loved Alana. She was a fantastic character – I would love to read a book on her!
It also really pains me that there are “facilities” like the one described in this book. It made me want to throw up thinking about people being subjected to such hate.
Overall, this is a great story of love, honor and the will to be yourself.

Title: Living on the Edge (Tales from the Edge #2)
Author Name: L.M. Somerton
Publication Date & Length: August 16, 2013 – 112pgs

Synopsis

Sometimes it takes willpower to resist temptation but courage to give in.

Aiden Keller is a brilliant and intriguing young man. When he’s convicted of hacking, his sentence takes him to The Edge, a high-end corporate training company with a mysterious sideline. There he is given into the custody of its owner, the enigmatic and demanding Heath Anders, and his business partner Joe Dexter.

From the moment Heath takes charge of Aiden he recognizes the boy’s submissive nature, even though it is well hidden beneath a veneer of snarky attitude. But for twelve months, Aiden will be his responsibility and Heath cannot allow himself to get involved whilst the boy is obliged to obey him.

Aiden settles into his new life with the help of Olly, Joe’s pretty, submissive boyfriend, who is very perceptive when it comes to noticing the sparks of attraction flying between Aiden and Heath. Slowly and gently, he teaches Aiden that submission is not a weakness and to accept his desire to be dominated.

Unable to resist, Heath starts to test Aiden’s willingness to be obedient, and against all the odds, love (and lust) start to bloom. Aiden, however, is not quite what he seems and his past is about to endanger all their lives.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of BDSM, including D/s, bondage, chastity play, masturbation and voyeurism. It is best read as part of a series

Aiden is a favorite of mine from the start. Despite him being willful and tenacious, he is also kind, smart and loving.
Heath is a force to be reckoned with. I love his strength – he is described as exuding power – Somerton does a great job at showing the reader his dominance.
This story had great mystery! I loved how Somerton wove it in to the story. It made it so much more interesting and allowed the characters to be more than their relationship. This book showed the real struggle that some submissive’s face – showed the true strength of the submissive.
Heath and Aiden’s relationship is perfect for them and I loved how they defined it themselves. It is not a typical straightforward situation and I liked how Somerton was able to keep the flow of the relationship smooth.
So far, I like Aiden’s character the best out of the series.

Caleb is a hard character to get to know. We only are given a glimpse in to the history of Caleb and Kale. However, right away you know that Caleb is the protector. Kale knows that he is in danger, but is resistant to having a protection duty placed on him. Then, in walks Aleksi… Because of Aleksi’s extra abilities, he can instantly smell the desire that Kale embodies.
I really liked this story. It was full of mystery, twists and turns and kept me on my toes. Kale and Aleksi – Whew! HOT couple alert.
You really were given a look into what makes Kale himself – how he came to be a model. It helped to know his character, his motivation and it also helped to build his relationship with Aleksi.
While you don’t know too much about Aleksi, the fact that he shares so much of himself with Kale – you see the softer side of the Saber Tooth Tiger. Aleksi’s dominant side takes over in order to protect Kale.
The relationship between Kale and Aleksi is a beautiful one – balanced, with just enough intrigue.
There is really not a lot to say about this book, other than it was hot, a great story and I can’t wait to read the next book!

This book had it all, romance, mystery and a lot of action. It was well written with a great plot. I love books that turn into series, that keep you hooked to read more about the characters involved in a business, in this case it’s the Shifter Protection Specialists.
Kale and Aleksi were the main character in this book. Aleksi was a shifter bodyguard who was to protect Kale.  Their story was exciting and even had me laughing at times.
My favorite line was “I hope you don’t have a problem with cats.”  It was a very moving love story wrapped up with an intense plot.Epilogue indicated who the next book is going to be about. There could be so many good stories coming from this group and I look forward to reading more about the
Shifter Protection Specalists.  An excellent read.

Excerpt

“Something stupid?”

Aleksi shrugged. “Some fans become stalkers. Others become criminals and a few have hurt the object of their obsession when they weren’t able to make them do what they imagined.”

As much as he didn’t want to scare his protectee, he understood that Kale needed to know this was serious and not something to be shrugged off because it didn’t fit into his lifestyle.

“I’m not sure I wanted to know that,” Kale commented with a grimace.

“You need to be aware of the danger. If you’re right and this is merely a fan who got carried away and will move on, then I’m sure all this will be cleared up in the next day or two. If I’m right and this is a credible threat, then one way or the other this will end soon.”

A tense silence followed and he started to feel guilty about his honesty. Perhaps his attraction to the model was throwing him off his game.

“That’s okay. I meant what I said at the office. I’ll do what you tell me when it concerns my safety. I keep my word.” Kale stabbed the studio floor button angrily and went quiet.

Aleksi was about to say something when the ding of the elevator doors sounded and, just like that, Kale seemed to shake off the attitude. It was the same way a fighter put on his game face before combat.

“By the way, Mr. McCade insinuated that you were a cat. What kind of cat?”

Grinning, Aleksi ignored Kale’s gaze and kept looking through the decreasing gap as the elevator doors slid closed. “I’m a saber-tooth tiger.”

Characters

The focus for any story is the characters, so most of my time before finishing a manuscript is taken up by fleshing out the characters and making sure they paint a true picture of a believable person. The walls of my office are similar to how I imagine a crime investigation room, with proposed character sketches, their known associates, breakdown of personality including likes and dislikes as well as their full history.

For Kale, I started out with the hair and eyes and the fact that he’d have a weird aversion to sugar and a sarcastic defensive attitude. That later grew into him snubbing grilled cheese sandwiches until he tries them, discovering he actually loves them and having ambition beyond relying on his looks. When thoughts of his history came about, I realized he would need a brother… and so the relationship between Kale and Caleb was born. Their brother Garrick was a more complicated addition since his character is steeped in trauma for the other two brothers. However, this trauma also underpins Kale’s need to give back and make a positive difference alongside Caleb, hence their dogged support of veteran’s charities but also the brothers’ reluctance to trust others.

Aleksi was a harder character to realize but I later put that down to his feline qualities. Cats are difficult and contrary by nature and apart from his demand for a pile of soft and silky cushions, Aleksi was disinclined to divulge much about himself to me. Once Aleksi got bored with being challenging and deigned to share, I fell in love with who he was and his rock solid loyalty and his fierce loving nature he hides under the hard, controlled shell. It soon became clear that Aleksi, like most felines, like comforts and has a weakness for luxuries. This fleshed out the concept of his home in the forest being his sanctuary, decked out with soft, fuzzy towels, a warm atmosphere and cozy furnishes that is untouched by the  suffocating cold indifference of the city.

Each character has a pro and con list that keeps track of their idiosyncrasies. I’ll give you a sneak peak. Kale’s pros- sweet, loving, loyal, sacrificing and determined versus Kale’s cons- hard headed, trapped in his own façade, defensive, stubborn with trust issues. Meanwhile Aleksi’s pros- strong, protective, fierce, intelligent, strategic, kind and accepting versus Aleksi’s cons- dominant personality, uncompromising, contrary, sneaky with doubts about the longevity of commitment. These are only the tip of the iceberg but it should give you an insight into my processes.

There really is nothing better than a good book and a big mug of tea on a rainy day, which is often needed when considering the wet weather in Wales. She is rarely found without a book of some description on her person and a notebook, she can always be seen scribbling and doodling while lost in thought about sometimes random nonsense or day dreaming about alternate worlds of fiction. Real life may not be much fun but the imagination allows infinite possibilities to be explored and lots of naughty fun too if you’re up to the challenge. So in the words of a crazy scientist – I reject your reality and submit one of my own. Happy reading.

4 Stars for Reaching the Edge (#1 in Tales from The Edge) by L.M. Somerton – #MM #BDSM @lmsomerton @Totally_Bound

1.3

Title: Reaching the Edge (Tales from the Edge #1)
Author Name: L.M. Somerton
Publication Date & Length: July 19, 2013 – 112pgs

Synopsis

When you reach the edge, you can’t avoid taking a leap of faith.

Joe Dexter leads a complicated life. In one world he is a consultant criminal psychologist—in another he runs The Edge, a successful corporate training company. He’s also an active Dom in the London BDSM scene.

A social call to The Underground, a club owned by an old friend, turns into much more when Joe is introduced to a prospective sub. Falling hard for the boy’s tumbling blonde curls, huge blue eyes and desperate need for protection, Joe carefully coaxes him out of his shell. By the end of an intense weekend, unbreakable bonds have been forged and Joe is well on the way to becoming Olly’s Master.

Joe knows that there is trauma in Olly’s past, but it is not until his professional and private lives collide that Joe discovers the truth. He knows he shouldn’t have let Olly out of his sight but it’s too late—Olly’s old Master is back on the scene and he’s not in the mood to forgive and forget.

With Olly’s life on the line, Joe risks everything to save him. Has Joe found his perfect submissive only to lose him in a horrible twist of fate, or will love win the day? They’ve reached the edge and there’s no avoiding a leap of faith.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of D/s, including chastity play, and references to past rape and current PTSD. There are also non-consensual plot elements with an aggressive former Master which include kidnapping, bondage and the forcible insertion of a butt plug.

This book hints at rape and a controlling, non-consensual BDSM pairing. If those bother you, do not read.
Joe has two jobs. One where he teases out the psyche of criminals and sometimes victims and one where he gets to entice people’s creative minds, where they can play out their desires. When Joe meets Olly, sparks fly, wills are tested and ultimately, they each find what they were searching for – understanding and love.
Poor Olly has been put through the ringer. I love his undying spirit – he’s mischievous, but loyal, smart and loving. He allows Joe to truly care for him. He also is so much stronger than he appears. Although his previous Dom was an absolute brute and bastard, Olly’s willingness to seek what he still craves is admirable.
Joe is always loving and kind with Olly. I love how he lets Olly be himself. Joe doesn’t try to crush his spirit, just gather it on a tighter leash.
This was a great start to the series.

This is a companion short story to Temptations of Desire and takes place when Alex/Lexie is a teen. It’s not a romance.

I loved this story. It was a great exploration of Alex’s feelings about his identity (I am using “his” because the story starts out with Alex presenting/expressing as a boy). I enjoyed the relationship between Alex and his sister Lyric.

There’s no way to do this work Justice without spoiling it for readers. I think it’s an important read about a subject that isn’t talked about nearly enough. I highly recommend this one, even if Ms. O’Riley’s other works in this series don’t appeal. It’s appropriate even for younger teens, who may be figuring out their identity or have friends who are.

This was a beautiful story that I thought would have been great to add in to Temptations of Desire. While is was fine as a novella, I thought it would have been more powerful had it been placed in the story of Alex and Dal. I think it would have helped me understand Alex’s past more and it also would have helped me see the relationship between his sister and himself as a healthier one as well.

Mac and Tanner were a great duo. Mac was always looking for the answer. His inquisitive nature was something that I loved about his character. Tanner was more of an introvert – more bookworm type. Both characters seemed to be looking for something (other than the killer) throughout the story.

I liked how Chase set up for what could be the next book. Both characters were deep, but I do wish that we had more information on Mac. Tanner’s background helped a lot in allowing me to understand where he was coming from.

The mystery of the killer, the family drama, and the secrets that Tanner keeps – they made for a great story. I can’t wait for the next book!!!

Alexander James Noble is a gender fluid gay man who gave up on finding Mister Right a long time ago. He’s not asking for much, though. He just wants a guy who loves all of him and appreciates his feminine form too.

At the local LGBTQ center where Alex regularly volunteers, he meets Dal Sayer, an officer of the Milwaukee PD. Because he’s been rejected one too many times, Alex doesn’t trust the huge cop and the interest he shows in him, but once Dal sets his mind on something, he goes all out. Pushing aside his preconceived notions, Alex opens up just a little and soon caves.

From their first date—while dealing with his father’s failing health and his parents’ demands for him to settle down and have children—Dal never takes his eyes off his goal of making Alex his. But proving to Alex he isn’t like all the men who couldn’t see him for who he truly was and only wanted to hide him away is harder than he thought.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS STORY!!!  While I enjoyed the Jamie-Seth and Chase – Rhys stories, this one was my favorite.

Dal is a detective who is the brother of Rhys. Dal sees how happy his brother is, and when he meets the beautiful Alex, he can’t get him out of his mind.

Alex is shy, sweet and wants to find someone who will understand his fluid desires. With a past that has created scars both physically and emotionally, Dal has his work cut out for him.

With family pressures placed firmly on Dal’s shoulders, he tries to appease his family, while being true to himself. The family dynamic in this story was refreshing, even if it did confuse me at times.

O’Riley did an amazing job at developing the how and when Dal and Alex’s pairing came about – it was beautiful in its construction.

Alex and Dal find their way to each other and when the sparks fly, man, is it HOT.

I really enjoyed that O’Riley brought Alex’s family back in to the story – helped to repair some of those scars.

While this book did not have the mystery in it that the others did, I enjoyed it all the same. Dal and Alex’s love was so awesome to watch unfold. I liked how O’Riley wrote about a subject that you don’t often see – I feel like there is an entire group of people who are left out of the LGBT group, but O’Riley did an amazing job with this story.

FourandHalfStars

This book is part of a series, but I only read this one and its companion short story. I picked it up specifically because of the bisexual and gender-fluid characters.

Ms. O’Riley more than delivered on those counts. I loved her direct exploration of both themes. I was a little concerned that it was a shade cliched, with Dal being a big, muscled, manly cop and Alex/Lexie being very feminine even when identifying as male. However, Dal wasn’t at all a stereotype, and neither was Alex/Lexie. I adored them both and probably could read about them forever. They were utterly perfect.

I liked how Dal didn’t quite understand Alex/Lexie’s gender fluidity at first but came to make sense of it. That felt realistic, from experience. And even though the ending really was a bit contrived and cliched, I’m a sucker for exactly that kind of ending.

My only issue, which is why I can’t give it 5 stars, was glossing over the action of catching the serial killer. That would have been exciting! As it was, it ended up being skipped in favor of a really awkward information dump. Yes, it would’ve made the book longer, but I would have preferred that. It made the parts that came afterward feel rushed and confusing.

All in all, though, it was good, and I highly recommend it.

Chase is still looking for someone who will love him. Rhys is a somewhat hard, but loyal PI. When these two meet because of Jamie’s past, there is instant dislike. Seth, Jamie and Dal can’t understand what is going on. Little did they know that this was not the first encounter.

With some meddling friends, Chase comes to work for Rhys’ PI company as their IT person. Sparks fly between those two, but when Rhys’ past lover creates waves, Rhys has to work quickly to show Chase that their first encounter was a fluke – that Chase was exactly who he wanted.

Both Seth and Rhys learn that what is important is finding someone and holding on to them, love them for who they are and to leave preconceived notions out of their relationship. Love can conquer all.

When Chase’s life in in danger, Rhys will stop at nothing to protect him. Chase learns that love is worth fighting for and puts his trust in Rhys when the time counts.

The characters in this story were well thought out, developed and made for such a strong cast. Separately, each character had strength, but together, they became this unbreakable force.

I really enjoyed this story. While the book had undertones of BDSM, it was more about power exchange than the physical BDSM that so many books contain.  The characters were developed well and I thought that O’Riley did an amazing job at not rushing the romance. It had a great overall feel. The mystery was one that I didn’t expect in the story and I felt that it really helped to show how close each group of characters were – their friendships, love, trust in each other. I would definitely read more of this author.

5 Stars for Centerfold by Kris Norris – #Menage #Thriller @Totally_Bound

1.3

Title: Centerfold
Author Name: Kris Norris
Publication Date & Length: January 30, 2015 – 154pgs

Synopsis

Lights. Camera…die.

Detective Scarlet Reid has spent the past three months trying to make her alter ego, Ms. December, a ghost of Christmas past. Forced to become the sexy centerfold in a high-stakes undercover assignment, she’s spent more time pulling copies of her naked butt off the bulletin boards at the precinct than she has collaring criminals—and it’s far from over.

A deadly agenda. A gruesome new case has revealed a disturbing trend—one that has placed Scarlet on a list of possible targets. With limited options, she’s going to have to resurrect Ms. December—and her old partnership—which means facing the one man who stole more than just a kiss.

A love worth fighting for. Federal Agent Roman Kinkaid has some explaining to do. His final assignment with Scarlet changed him, and he’s been running from her ever since. But he’s ready to make things right—only he’s not alone. His partner and lover, Special Agent Aiden Cross, is just as invested and determined as Roman is to claim Scarlet as theirs. And they aren’t taking no for an answer, especially when their souls—and Scarlet’s life—are on the line.

They have three weeks to catch the stalker before Scarlet’s time runs out and they lose their one chance at a happy ending.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of voyeurism and a scene including rough penetration.

Publisher’s Note: This book was previously released by Totally Bound under the same title. It has been considerably expanded, revised and re-edited for re-release.

Review

FiveStars

Scarlet, Roman and Aiden are a very HOT trio. I really enjoyed Scarlet’s sassy attitude – she was tough, but soft at the same time. She knew how to take care of herself and was able to play with the best of them.

This had great twists and turns – I loved the mystery within the story. It helped create more depth to each of the characters. While I didn’t really like Roman all that much, in the end, I forgave him.

I liked how Roman and Scarlet’s chemistry ebbed and flowed like a normal relationship. I wish I knew more about Aiden, but overall, these characters meshed well together.

This book combined what I love reading: Sex, Mystery and a happy ending.

AuthorBio

Kris sees herself as somewhat obsessive and feels she tends to push the boundaries of common sense sometimes. Her friends graciously see her as passionate and adventurous. After all, speed limits are only a guideline and shouting is just her way of rising above the chaos. Kris loves the outdoors. If she’s not on her computer— or chasing after her three kids— she’s out on a trail somewhere, either running with her dog or riding her mountain bike. Kris took up adventure racing a few years ago, and tries to enter one or two races every year. Kris started writing some years back, and it took her a while to realize she wasn’t destined for the padded room, and the voices chattering away in her head were really other characters trying to take shape. (And since they weren’t telling her to conquer the human race, she went with it.) Kris loves writing erotic novels. She loves heroines who kick butt, heroes who are larger than life, and sizzling sex scenes that make you squirm in your seat, and leave you feeling just a bit breathless.
