Excerpt

The cyclo had bumped across the bridge, following the curve in the road, then moved quickly down the final straight stretch, past houses and shops, past rows of trees and walls and occasional open spaces, past vendors who lined the street’s edge selling gasoline in glass bottles. Motorcycles, Lambretta mini-buses packed with people, cream-and-blue Renault taxis, pedestrians with baskets and boxes—all crowded the street. Noises, smells, and smoke came from everywhere, and as the driver increased his speed, I smiled, gripping the metal frame tighter and pushing slightly with my feet as the moist wind rushed around me. Speeding through the streets of Saigon, wearing the green Air Force-issued jungle fatigues, my life of a year ago seemed unreal.

Title: The Rules of Love (The Hampton Road Club #2)
Author Name: Morticia Knight
Publication Date & Length: February 6, 2015 – 143pgs

Synopsis

Master Saul is captivated by the beautifully submissive Kenneth and the boy’s love of pain. Unfortunately, Kenneth belongs to Master Preston.

It’s 1926 and as one of the founding members of the Hampton Road Club, Master Saul Liebowitz has enjoyed the charms of many willing submissives over the years. One of the newer submissives to the club has captured his attention more than anyone has in a long time. Kenneth is tall, muscular and also seems to have a greater love of pain than most. If only Kenneth didn’t already belong to another Master.

After Kenneth’s Master died years before, he allowed himself to be taken in by the promises of Master Preston. As time has gone by, Preston has become increasingly crueler to the point where Kenneth fears for his life. They’ve recently joined a sadomasochism club and Kenneth can’t help but yearn for the handsome Master the other boys speak so highly of—Master Saul.

Preston takes things too far one night, and when Saul and his good friend, Master Aaron, do some investigating, they realize that Kenneth might be in real danger. Amidst turmoil at the club over whether there should be rules to keep the boys safe and Preston’s play for power, Saul searches for a way to save Kenneth from what he’s sure is a deadly situation.

Both men fight for what they believe to be the right thing. When they find their way to one another, a wonderful new world opens up to them. But there’s one man out there who refuses to let go of the old ways. Kenneth is his property and Master Preston won’t give him up.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of violence and dubious consent.

Publisher’s Note: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

Warning: This book deals with abuse and non-consensual relations.
I really enjoy Knight’s style of writing. She is great at spinning a story, but in a way that is easy to read.
Master Saul is a kind heart. He is one of many dominants living in hiding during the 1920’s. BDSM was not widely known at this time and men were forced to carry relationships on in secret.
Kenneth is a submissive to his core. He is a protector, tenderhearted man who simply wants someone to cherish him.
I wanted to do bodily harm to Preston. He doesn’t deserve the title Master. He is a horrible person with a power complex. His narcissistic personality is tough to swallow. Even his “follower” Otis is someone I wanted to punch in the balls.
The bond that formed between Kenneth and Master Saul was strong from the very beginning. The love, however, was a little too “insta-love” for me. Despite that, I did enjoy the story.

Nathan Stephenson died 70 years ago, and he would like the world to think so, or at least one person… Cian Ambrose.

Cian Ambrose is unashamed about his bisexuality, and also proud that he is a Vampire. When Cian’s attempts to persuade Nathan to become a vampire go too far, Jonathan Cutler steps in to deal with the aftermath. He turned Nathan but agrees to keep that fact a secret.

It’s now the 21st Century and Jonathan is back to call in a favour from Nathan.

The writing was brilliant. The inner dilogue is comical, found myself laughing out loud many times. The sexual tension between Nathan and Cian is palpable through the pages. The author pulls you in to the story and you find yourself holding your breath often, wondering what will happen next. When you get two intense vampires in the same room, there is going to be sparks!! A very enjoyable read.

Title: The Master of Thornfield
Author Name: Zac Blue
Publication Date & Length: December 30, 2014 – 42pgs

Synopsis

Prior to the events of Jane Eyre, Grace Poole battles the devil as she struggles to save the master and mistress of Thornfield from the consequences of their sexual transgressions.

The rules of Victorian society decree that they can never be together, but the nineteen-year-old maid knows she must do everything in her power to save Mr. Rochester from the darkness that has engulfed Thornfield.

As the curse upon her mistress strengthens, Grace becomes a prisoner within the household she had once controlled. Helpless, the bisexual maid is forced to witness an orgy of sexual depravity while being denied her own sexual release.

Grace escapes Thornfield only to encounter an even greater danger.

When Rochester appears with an Obeah man and his sister—the two people who may be able to save Thornfield—Grace is confronted with both new carnal temptations and her own increasingly complex feelings for her cuckolded master. She warns Rochester of the orgy of sin that has gripped Thornfield, but there are other secrets she cannot divulge.

Grace finds comfort in the arms of Amelia, the Obeah man’s sultry sister.

That comfort, however, is short-lived as Amelia makes Grace realize the enormity of the task before them. The maid must decide if her loyalty lies with her master or mistress and if there is any way she can continue to serve them both.

Grace will be forced to decide exactly how much she is willing to sacrifice in order to save her master.

This book was interesting. I’ve read the previous two installments, and I have to say this one was vastly different. It seemed more settled and resigned–the tone not the writing. That certainly fit the mood of the book.

The twist at the end was certainly interesting. I’m still wondering with Mrs. Rochester’s plans were for the child, but it’s not as relevant with what happened.

I am curious as to why every woman Grace got close to love turned evil in it though. It seems very sexist in a way. It’s not as if the men she craved or had sex with turned evil or were killed, it was only the women. (This part is for the series as a whole, not just the last book.)

This book was good, quick, hot, sexy, and kept my interest. It definitely meets the standards of the first two in the series.

This is Part 3, the conclusion of the Thornfield series. In keeping with the other parts, it maintains its erotic momentum throughout.

Reading this series was a stretch for me. I didn’t (and still don’t) care for books that are mostly very graphic sex with little else. However, this was well-written and had enough of an intriguing storyline to keep me from feeling bored with the continuous sex.

The ongoing theme of good and evil, and what constitutes both of those, was interesting. The differences in the sexual encounters reflected the various perspectives of the characters on the subject, which I found fascinating to read.

The end was fitting for the series and felt right given the events leading up to it. While I’m glad I took the risk on this series, it’s not for everyone. Readers shouldn’t expect to go into the book for the purpose of being aroused by the erotic content–they should go in knowing it’s more likely to make them think.

Excerpt

A gentle knock came hours later and, without waiting for a response, Amelia entered. She stood framed in the doorway, and Grace took a long, lustful appraisal of her. Her short, wiry hair, her strong face dominated by a large, elegant nose. Her eyes twinkled; her lips looked wet with anticipation. She was a good foot taller than Grace and moved with a feline gait into the room. She still wore the grey dress and carried with her a small black drawstring bag.

“I am here,” she said. She loomed over Grace, who sat on the bed.

“Yes,” said Grace and opened her legs.

“I am a pious woman, Miss Grace. But I believe that there is a time for piety and a time for passion. I believe that a kiss can heal as much as a prayer.”

“Then heal me,” said Grace and lay back on the bed.

Amelia placed the bag on the floor and approached the bed. She took a long, slow impression of Grace. She smiled. “Such a pretty thing you are and so full of hellfire and yearning.”

This short work was lovely and sensual. Although it was historical erotic romance, there were definitely a few liberties taken regarding the time period. This seemed mostly in order to deliver a happy ending, so it didn’t bother me much. Readers wanting a genuine period piece may be disappointed.

Although there wasn’t a lot of depth, I found it both sweet and steamy, just right for a brief afternoon escape. Very enjoyable.

The next few nights passed in a similar way, with Henry nodding and smiling, and sometimes laughing, when Rafe talked of his life in Umbria. Falling to sleep each night in his narrow bed, Henry found himself dreaming of orange trees and vineyards. Sometimes he even dreamt of Rafe wandering among them in the Mediterranean sun, but on the fourth night when Henry went to Rafe’s room, something had changed.

Rafe seemed on edge as he opened the door, and he sat on the sofa in silence as Henry carried out his tasks.

Henry started to leave, when Rafe spoke at last, an unfamiliar tension in his voice. “Simpkins, could I ask you something?”

“Of course, sir.”

Rafe gazed intently at his fingernails, giving Henry no clue as to what he might ask. His eyes remained lowered as he made his enquiry.

“Simpkins, are you—are you the same kind of man as Oscar Wilde?

ThreeStar

This is my first book by Cooper Davis.
I love M/M genre, especially historical pieces. They are usually full of passion and intensity. The part I am torn about is the writing. At some parts I felt like I needed to get out my thesaurus. However, my curiosity was peaked and I finished it.
King Arend Tollemach is a passionate man and at 40 years old,
he wants to explore a side that he never had a chance to try,
taking a male lover. Enter Julian, a concubine. He has been waiting for
10 years to become someone’s lover. He is beautiful, and intense.
When the King and Julian meet you can feel the sparks through the pages, even with the fancy writing. I enjoyed the awkwardness the King was feeling. I enjoyed Julian’s joy and enthusiasm at finally being chosen as a concubine. There were some comical, heart-warming moments.  The feelings were quick and the intimacy took some time. The drama in this story left a lot to be desired. This is the first in a series about this couple. I am not sure that my curiosity was peaked enough to continue reading the series.

A voracious reader across all subgenres of m/m fiction, Cooper is particularly fond of courtships set against the backdrop of breathless scandal and intrigue found in period drawing rooms. She is thrilled that her first historically-themed m/m romance series debuts this December with A KING UNDONE (Samhain).

Review

FourStars

This epic period piece captivated me and took me into Classical antiquity through the lens of two yearning men struggling to rise above their era. I was expecting a historical setting half-assed for the sake of sexual allure, which I’ve experienced in the past, but this was the opposite.
Oh, the sex was hot, and plentiful, and developed with a lovely slow burn. But it’s interspersed with goat herding (not a euphemism), Spartan intrigues, adorable ferret antics (not a euphemism), and the Greek Gods themselves.
This book is well-researched and yet the story is not exposition, but experiential. Okay, I feel like I’m describing what the book is not. Whatever negative connotations might come along with the somewhat shallow title (or is that just me?) they will be dispelled immediately.
The book IS a lovely love story between two young, strapping men of great physical prowess and thoughtful introspection. Antiquity is well-represented, but I want more. I’m encouraged that this is listed as part of a series. Onward!

Excerpt

This time when Andreas opened his eyes he wasn’t surprised to see Theron in the dim light from the dying coals in the brazier. Was it possible to become used to something this miraculous? How was he supposed to deal with it when Theron improved and left him?

Theron stirred in his arms, making sleepy little noises and tugging Andreas’ arm tighter around his bare chest. Andreas froze. Was he waking up? How would he react to being in Andreas’ embrace? Wasn’t this something usually reserved for lovers?

They weren’t lovers. Never could be. But the longer Theron stayed, the more Andreas wished for. He wanted Theron more than was good for either of them. It was much too late now for Theron to leave without taking a bit of Andreas with him. Every instinct warned Andreas to keep this man at arm’s length, but his body kept betraying him.

But did Theron want him as much? Or was he happy with whatever they could seize?

Theron rolled over onto his belly with Andreas’ arm still tightly in his grip, dragging Andreas half atop his back. Andreas lay with his head pillowed on Theron’s shoulder.

The warm comforting scent of another human surrounded him, working its magic. Andreas sank against Theron and closed his eyes. He could dream they would be together forever even if that could never happen in reality

Kayla Jameth grew up on the family farm in Ohio, baling hay, raising cattle, and making maple syrup. An unrepentant tomboy, her father taught her to weld before she graduated from high school.

She attended Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University and later, Texas A&M University in her pursuit of veterinary medicine, taking her farther away from her rural roots. You can transplant the county girl, but you can’t make her a city slicker. Besides, it was only going to be for a little while, right?

But it wasn’t all hard work for Kayla, her sojourn as the princess of the Celestial Kingdom left her with the title sir and a costume closet the envy of many knights, lords, and ladies. See? She does have some ladylike qualities complete with the title of Lady to back it up.

After declaring for years that she was just a veterinarian who wrote not an author, Kayla now finds herself living in Spring, Texas (practically Houston) and writing m/m erotic romance. The location is probably a bigger surprise than the genre. Never the kind of girl to discuss makeup and clothing designers, she would rather be outside getting dirty with the boys.

Kayla shares her home with a cat, two guinea pigs, a gerbil, three guppies, a husband and a son and daughter.
